The Passiflora family is a collective of over 500 species of passionflower. The most common species used for medicines today is the passiflora incarnata, which is commonly called the "maypop." Native peoples of the Americas used and currently still use passionflower as a mild sedative. Today, passionflower is often used to help manage anxiety and insomnia but has also been known to help with pain, menopause, ADD, and hemorrhoids. It appears to boost the level of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in your brain. This compound lowers brain activity, which may help you relax and sleep better.
It is thought that passionflower is named as such because Spanish settlers thought that the blooms of some species of the plant bore a resemblance to a crucifix, but many indigenous cultures who used the herb in sacrament have said that it's because it "gave people who used this herb a greater reverence for Earth as it related to God."
Passionflower can stimulate uterine contractions in expecting mothers, so please do not use if you are pregnant.
In spellcraft, passionflower is associated with Christ Consciousness, clairvoyance, heightened spiritual states, greater awareness, and channeling.
Your passionflower will arrive in a sealed bag, in either a half-ounce or ounce.
